When Your Shieldmaiden Would Rather Slay Than Sway
Fairy Tales & Myths Retold
I’m thrilled to be part of the Fairy Tales & Myths Retold sale running through February 28, 202. But I have to confess something: browsing through the collection, I noticed a trend, a lot of these retellings lean heavily into spicy romance.
And then there’s my book, Shieldmaiden’s Suitor.
Looking at the covers lined up together, I realized mine is definitely on the tamer side of the spectrum. Here’s the thing: this was my first romance, and I was so captivated by the mythology itself that the romance became more of a companion to the myth rather than the main event.
The Trope I Didn’t Use (And Why)
Could I have gone with enemies-to-lovers? Sure, it’s wildly popular. But my shieldmaiden put her foot down (probably while holding a sword): a warrior woman trained to defend her people would be far more likely to slay an enemy rather than fall into bed with one.
And I absolutely refused to write a forced seduction or captive scenario. My shieldmaiden needed agency, strength, and a romance that honored both her warrior spirit and her heart.
So yes, Shieldmaiden’s Suitor might be less steamy than its sale companions, but it’s got myth, magic, and a love story that doesn’t require anyone to compromise who they are.
Don’t Miss This Sale!
If you’re looking for fairy tale and myth retellings, whether you want all the spice or something a bit more myth-focused, this collection has something for everyone.
