Creating Definitive Editions Through Audiobook Production: An Author’s Journey
Why I’m Pivoting to Audio
The reading landscape is changing. Young people are consuming less traditional text but still crave compelling stories. While I can’t produce my own films, I can leverage the tools available to transform my written work into audiobooks and that decision has become unexpectedly transformative for my entire catalog.
The Unexpected Benefit: Finding Errors
Creating audiobooks has become more than just format conversion; it’s become my editing process. Hearing my words read aloud has revealed typos and errors I’d missed in previous editions. Rather than feeling embarrassed, I’ve embraced this as an opportunity to create definitive editions of my stories.
My Process for Creating Author’s Definitive Editions
Here’s my workflow:
1. Create the audiobook with corrected terminology and fixed errors
2. Document all corrections for future print and ebook updates
3. Publish corrected versions across all formats
4. Release definitive editions through my direct store
The Draft2Digital Challenge
The one hurdle? Draft2Digital requires tokens for paperback updates before 3 months. However, I’m willing to invest in quality. Not to mention and by the time I work through my backlist, I should have earned enough free tokens to complete the corrections to the rest of my catalog.
Starting with My Most Popular Work
I’m beginning with my Native-themed stories, the works readers seem to love most. My cornhusk doll story, “Wakia: the No-Face Cornhusk Doll”, fortunately, is already in shape.
The Future of Independent Publishing
This journey proves that audiobook production isn’t just about reaching new audiences: it’s about perfecting your craft and creating the author’s definitive edition you’ve always envisioned. For independent authors, audio tools offer both creative and editorial opportunities.
